COUTUME FOuNDATION
ART & CRAFT
The Fiminco Foundation took over a derelict industrial site just outside Paris with the goal of creating a resource centre devoted to artists from around the globe and open to the public. At the foot of the main Fiminco Foundation Building and its glass block facade, Coutume settled into the rough concrete structure preserved by Cut Architecture. The firm erected a monumental counter for Coutume, oscillating between a luminous art installation and equipment for the specialty coffee roaster.
Blank canvas
Old industrial doors condemned by hardwood ties painted a bright orange, a visible structure with exposed wooden beams, a concrete slab, neon lights and metallic cable trays provide the opportunity for a radical project that will define the identity of Coutume.
Chiselled Jewel
The square frame, an icon of all Coutume locations, unfolds as a compilation of glass blocks is arranged to form the counter and wall behind the back bar. The installation of backlit blocks is a lustrous beacon inundating the café area with an artificial, almost clinical, source of light that draws upon the strong contemporary atmosphere of the art gallery.
Contrasts
In order to counterbalance the stripped down ambiance created up to this point, specific details like powder coated steel furnishings, large furniture with veined plywood panels and an array of plants were carefully selected as a welcoming visual contrast with the raw shell. This duality parallels Coutume’s recognized know-how, vacillating between the art of coffee and the rigour required as a specialty coffee roaster.

La Fondation Fiminco a réinvesti une ancienne friche industrielle à Romainville, aux portes de Paris, afin d’en faire un lieu de ressources ouvert à tous les publics et au service des artistes du monde entier.
Au pied du bâtiment principal et de sa façade de pavés de verre, Coutume s’établit dans une coque brute de béton que CUT décide de conserver en l’état pour y installer un comptoir monumental oscillant entre installation artistique luminescente et équipement technique de torréfacteur de spécialité.
Ecrin brut
D’anciennes portes industrielles condamnées par des traverses de bois peintes de couleur orange vif, une structure apparente poteaux-poutres, une dalle de béton, des néons et des chemins de câbles métalliques techniques offrent l’occasion d’un projet radical déclinant l’identité de Coutume.
JOYAU CISELE
La trame carrée identifiable dans toutes les adresses de Coutume se développe ici à l’aide de pavés de verre qui forment un comptoir et un mur d’arrière bar. Véritable signal lumineux, cette installation de briques rétroéclairées inonde l’espace du café de lumière artificielle, presque clinique, ajoutant à l’atmosphère résolument contemporaine de la galerie d’art.
CONTRASTES
Afin de contrebalancer avec l’ambiance dépouillée créée jusqu’à présent, l’emploi de détails ponctuels de mobilier en acier thermolaqué orange, de larges meubles en contreplaqué de bois veiné et des plantes permet de contraster visuellement avec le brutalisme de la coque. Cette dualité fait écho au savoir-faire de Coutume, oscillant entre l’art du café de terroir et la rigueur de la torréfaction de spécialité.
